Kerikeri

We decided to drive up to 90 mile beach stopping to look at Haruru Falls and then Kerikeri where the second oldest mission is. There is also the Stone Store, the oldest surviving stone house built 1835.

Rewa's Village, a reconstructed pre-European Maori fishing village is nearby. This is a typical sleeping house and a food store.

Paihia

We drove north from Auckland to Paihia on the Bay of Islands. It is next to the Whitianga Treaty Grounds. Above is a picture of our room at the hostel.

Below is a picture of the bay.

We took the ferry across to Russell. This is Christ Church, the oldest surviving church built in 1836.

We then went to the Pompallier Mission where they used to print the first bibles in Maori. They still have the presses there and the tanning works where they tanned hides for the covers.

This notice was down by the beach.

When we got back to Paihia we had some mussels, look at the size of these.

Auckland Winter Garden and Museum

Today we walked to the Winter Gardens. The colours and shapes of some of the plants were really interesting. I can see some lovely dyed fabrics and some more printing when I get home.

We then went on to Auckland Museum. There were some lovely examples of bark cloth.

And of course there many examples of wonderful carving.
