Whitianga

After three days at Paihia we moved on to Whitianga - quite a drive - which used to be one of New Zealand's busiest ports but is now lovely and quiet. On the way we stopped at Hot Water Beach. When the tide is out you dig a hole in the sand and it fills up with hot water - so hot in places you are in danger of scalding yourself.

This the hostel we stayed in ...

... and this is the view from our window

When we left on our way to Rotorua we stopped at Kawakawa to see the famous Hundertwasser toilets.

There was also a sculpture garden and some wall art.
